How to Spray Tan Yourself at Home: Tips for a Salon Quality Result

We all want to look ready for the beach, but not everyone has time to tan naturally or on a tanning bed before it’s time to put on the first swimsuit of the season. Spray tanning is a convenient option, but it’s easy to worry about unevenness and bad results. Giving a spray tan isn’t as hard as it may appear, but by following these simple steps we can give you the confidence to give a salon quality performance every time.

1. Prep your skin. One thing that can lead to uneven application is rough skin. Shave as you normally would, then exfoliate, especially your elbows, knees and heels. Use a moisturizer (like St. Tropez’s tan enhancing moisturizer) all over, then wait about an hour before you begin.2. Prep yourself and the room. The bathroom is probably best, but you can work anywhere where you’re not worried about making a mess as long as the room is well ventilated. Clip your hair up under a plastic cap to avoid getting any spray tan in your hair.3. Wear gloves to avoid orange palms. It’s an unfortunate side effect of spray tans, so avoid them with tan applicator mitts. Not only will they keep your palms from staining, they’ll also come in handy when it comes time to even out the tan.4. Spray on one layer at a time. Don’t spray it as dark as you want all at once; it could streak or end up even darker than expected. Instead, spray on your spray tan solution one layer at a time, waiting 10 minutes between layers. Be sure to spray it as you would any aerosol product, rather than spraying up and down. Start at your feet and work up, using a circular motion.5. Don’t forget your face and back. How you do this is completely up to you. If you don’t feel comfortable spraying something in your face, you can apply the tan using your gloves. For your back, use some spray tan on a back brush.6. Even out your tan. Use your gloves to smooth out any streaks. This can make all the difference when it comes to quality!

7. Wait 12 hours to shower. Once your tan has set, you’re swimsuit ready, and you did it all in the comfort of your own home!
